Over 20 Years of Service and Carlton’s Water is Still Number One

Filtronics, Inc. is pleased to announce the small municipality of Carlton, Oregon, which utilizes Filtronics Electromedia® V Automatic Filtration System, was judged best tasting water in Northwest Oregon in the 2008 Annual American Waterworks Association Northwest Subsection’s Best Tasting Water Competition. In a blind water tasting competition, judges sampled water from cities all over the state and evaluated each based upon odor, flavor and aftertaste. Carlton’s water was awarded first place beating out entries from Portland, Salem and other larger cities.

The History
In 1985, after the first turbidity standards were introduced in Oregon and exhaustive research was done by city engineers, a Filtronics Electromedia® V (EM-V) System was chosen to solve the cities surface water problems. Carlton’s water source, Panther Creek Reservoir which is approximately 7 miles west of town, had highly turbid raw water in the winter-time and algae in the summertime. The EM-V system was not only able to solve both problems and meet all water quality standards, but it also met their requirements for outstanding cost effectiveness. Andrew Klein of Klein Engineering who researched the available systems said, “Turbidity units would run way high,” he said. “They had a lot of logging upstream from their reservoir and they had a lot of problems with mud slides and things of this type. They get heavy, heavy turbidity – the water was so thick you could almost walk on it, but the system did a good job.”

In 2001, tightening regulations and population growth forced the City of Carlton to expand its treatment capacity to 1.4 million gallons a day. The flexibility of the EM-V system design allowed the city to upgrade so it accommodates the City’s current residents and projected growth through 2020 while still producing water that is less than 0.2 NTU (and frequently less than 0.1) exceeding the new regulations. The expanded EM-V fully automated Filtronics system consistently produces over 30 million gallons of outstanding drinking water each month to an estimated population of 1,900 today.

Envirowash® - Filtronics Efficient Backwash/Reclaim System

Among the key features to any of the Filtronics Electromedia® filters is the efficient use of water for backwash. For a typical application:

A. Our Electromedia filters only require a four minute backwash.
B. The backwash to filtration ratio is less than one percent.
C. Recover after backwash is short, generally five minutes.

With a raw water turbidity of 15 NTU or less, we conservatively estimate the interval filter run time duration to be 18 hours. The backwash to filtration ratio for a typical 750 gpm application is:

¬ 750 gpm x 18 hours x 60 minutes = 810,000 gallons produced.

¬ The backwash cycle lasts four minutes at 1800 gpm and surface wash lasts one minute at 180 gpm. (The backwash rate assumes 20 degrees Centigrade temperature of the source water).

¬ The total volume of water used for surface wash and backwash total 7,380 gallons.

¬ The backwash to filtration ratio is 7380/810,000 = 0.009 or 0.9% for a 99+% efficiency.

Filtronics systems have a very short recovery after backwash. The filter system produces a filtrate of less than 0.2 NTU in only five minutes after a backwash. Thus, not only adding to the efficiency of the system but producing a high water quality quickly to the potable water system.

Assuring a two minute rinse to waste water cycle, the overall efficiency is 98.9%.

To further reduce the amount of water lost, many applications include our highly efficient Envirowash®, a backwash water reclaim system to recover more than 99.999% of the water used for backwash. That’s water that can be sold to the customer, meeting the same effluent requirements as the raw source.

This video shows a 22MGD plant with a four minute backwash. When you view the video, think about the sheer volume of water saved by such a short backwash cycle. As stated above, this water can be reclaimed and sold to the customer. Efficient AND Revenue generating! :)

When Water Suffers from High Turbidity, Filtronics is the Clear Solution

High Turbidity Water TreatmentWater loses its transparency and takes on a hazy appearance when it contains a large quantity of suspended solid particles. A moderate lack of clarity is noticeable even to casual observers, but the average person would probably describe a sample of such water as “cloudy” or “murky.” The technical term – turbidity – is not widely known to laymen outside the water treatment industry and the environmental science community, where it’s an important concept in defining and assessing water quality.

Excess turbidity in a water supply can have a number of causes. Materials that can become suspended in water include clay particles, silt, organic matter, plankton and other microscopic organisms. Some of the environmental conditions that cause turbidity in water include:

  • Erosion due to soil disturbances or lack of ground cover as a result of construction, mining, logging or wildfires.
  • Urban runoff of debris from developed areas, where the prevalence of paved surfaces does not allow natural settling of particles to take place from stormwater before it reaches creeks, streams and rivers.
  • Wastewater that has been cleaned but still carries some residual particles.
  • Decay of living organisms, both plant and animal.
  • Algae, especially when environmental conditions make bodies of water especially nutrient-rich and trigger algal blooms.
  • Bottom-feeding fish that stir up sediment as they seek out food.

The flow rate of a water body plays a big part in its potential for turbidity. The heavier a rain is, the greater its ability to pick up and carry sand, silt, clay and organic particles. Fast-moving water can carry more and larger particles because the force of the water overcomes the tendency of these particles to settle out of suspension. High velocity water can also stir up bottom sediments that then become resuspended and increase turbidity even further.

Turbidity in itself may not necessarily present a health risk, but it can complicate the water disinfection process. Suspended matter can be a medium for the growth of microbes that do present a risk to human health. Turbidity is also sometimes associated with the presence of dangerous heavy metals such as lead, mercury and cadmium.

Precise measurements of water turbidity are made with a nephelometer, a device whose name is derived from the Greek word for “cloud.” Nephelometers measure the deflection of light that passes through a water sample; the greater the degree of light deflection, the greater the number and/or size of suspended particles in the sample. The resulting measurements are expressed in nephelometric turbidity units, or NTU.

In the U.S., the Environmental Protection Agency’s Surface Water Treatment Rule specifies that drinking water systems that make use of either surface water or ground water under the direct influence of surface water must not only disinfect their water but also filter it. In numeric terms, turbidity must never go above 5 NTUs, and turbidity must measure no higher than 1 NTU in at least 95% of daily water samples in any month.
